[ Article ] Is Fish Oil Good for Diabetes? Whats the Best Way to Get Them?

Now you may have heard that Omega-3 fatty acids are good for you. Is it true for people with Diabetes? If so, what’s the best way to get them?

Overview

The potential benefit of Omega-3 fatty acids was first documented by several researchers studying the Inuit Eskimos in the 1970s. Despite their high fat diets and resulting obesity, the Inuits had a low rate of death from heart disease. Given that the Inuits’ diet consisted primarily of cold-water fish, the researchers concluded that this type of fat- Omega-3 fatty acids- is important for our body. Now you may have heard that Omega-3 fatty acids are good for you. Is it true for people with Diabetes? If so, what’s the best way to get them?

Omega-3 fatty acids, raise levels of adiponectin in the bloodstream. Adiponectin is and important hormone that had beneficial effects on metabolic processed like glucose regulation and the modulation of inflammation. In long-term human studies. higher levels of adiponectin are associated with lower risks of Type-2 Diabetes and coronary heart disease. A study from Harvard University (reference 2) found that fish oil supplements raise adiponectin, which increases insulin sensitivity. This can lower risk of Diabetes and heart disease. Researchers felt this might help prevent or control Type-2 Diabetes.

A new study (reference 1) from England also found that women who consume more Omeaga-3s have a healthier mix of gut bacteria. These bacteria have been found to reduce the risk of obesity and Type-2 Diabetes.

What is Omega-3?

Omega-3s are a group of PUFAs (Polyunsaturated fatty acids). Those known as Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) are mostly found in fish. A third type, Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA), is found in plants. The body can use ALA to produce small amounts of the Other types.

When ensuring a regular intake of fatty fish such as trout, mackerel, tuna and salmon in your diet is difficult, supplementing with a quality fish oil supplement can help you to meet your daily requirement of this healthy nutrient.

Choosing the Right Fish Oil Supplement

It is important to realise that not all fish oil supplement are created in equal measures. In order to reap optimal heart protection and anti-inflammatory benefits, investing in the best quality and high strength fish oil is crucial.

A higher concentration of more than 600mg EPA provides a bigger boost of benefits at a faster rate. Poor quality versions may have less than the potency of high potency of high grade products. Betong that, the cheaper versions may actually be harmful to you. There are three (3) important factors to look for an Omega-3 fish oil supplement:

1. Higher Concentration

Quality supplements will naturally have higher active coumpound of EPA and DHA per softgel allowing you to cconsume few capsules while obtaining the desired effects. The typical potency of regular strength product will have approximately 180mg of EPA and DHA per softgel allowing you to consume few capsutes while obtaining the desired effects. The typical potency of regualr strength product will have approximately 180mg and 120mg of DHA.

Consumer Tips:
1000mg fish oil is NOT THE SAME as 1000mg Omega-3. Fish oil contains Omega-3, 1000mg retail brand fish oil typically contains only 300mg Omega-3. The other 700mg are fats that your body does not need. Always buy product with at least 70% Omega-3.

2. Purity

Given that our oceanrs are incleasing polluted by contaminants that inevitably end up in the food chain, choose fish oild that is “molecularly distilled”. This process remove virtually all traces of mercury, heavy metails, PCBs, dioxins and other chemicals.

3. Enteric-coated

Quality Omega-3 fish oil supplement is enteric-coated. It prevents the softgels from dissolving in your stomach. Instead, the softgels gradually dissolve in the much gentler environment of the intestines. It also reduces fish burps that people hates.
